My first encounter with eCinema Systems was in November, 2003, when I was searching for high definition monitors for my HD online finishing suite.  My room layout required one monitor for clients and a second unit for the editor's confidence monitor.  I chose a Sony BVM series 24" CRT for the clients, since at that time they were the "only choice" for professional users, but the $25K pricetag was prohibitive for my auxiliary monitor.

Martin Euredjian of ECinema Systems had the inspired idea to create the EDP-100, a box to convert HDSDI video to DVI to allow Apple Cinema Displays to be used.  This LCD was a full 1920x1200 pixels and gave an incredibly sharp image that was perfect for analyzing HD video, its resolution surpassed that of the Sony tube.  Although the nature of LCD and CRT display technology kept the two screens from color matching exactly, the Apple/Ecinema solution was pretty close, for less than half the price of the Sony CRT.  Interestingly, most viewers preferred the LCD image, which tended to be brighter and a bit redder than the CRT.

The reliability of the EDP-100 and the service from ECinema were excellent.  Any question I posed via email was quickly answered by Martin himself.

When the time came to purchase another HD monitor last year, I demoed LCDs from Sony and TV Logic, but the DCM-23 was my first choice.  It's sturdy construction made it easy to mount and the fact that it was calibrated "out of the box" and self-calibrating meant that I can be confident of the images it displays.  As always, eCinema communication and service after the sale have been outstanding.

I can't wait for the day when all CRTs have disappeared and I can say 'goodbye' to the slightly greenish SMPTE colors generated by the tubes.  At NAB 2007, ECinema Systems introduced an entire new line of monitors to fit a variety of editorial needs.  Whether I pick an FX, PRO, DCM or DPX, eCinema will always be my first choice when purchasing displays in the future.
